Omuthiya is host of fish consumption promotion tourney

Omuthiya Town in the Oshikoto Region hosts 2019 National Fish Consumption Day (NFCD) under the theme Towards a Fish-Eating Nation from 27-28 September, said De Wet Siluka, spokesperson of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.

In a media release issued on Tuesday, Siluka stated that a soccer and netball competition titled Hon Bernhard Esau 7-side Soccer Tournament has started in the region on Tuesday to run until 28 September.

The tournament is named after Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhard Esau. The tournament forms part of the 2019 NFCD and its participation is limited to school-going boys and girls under 15 years old, Siluka explained, adding that school teams were selected from 11 constituencies of the region.

Four netball teams and 14 soccer teams form part of the tournament. According to Siluka, the soccer tournament will coincide with NFCD roadshow in all 11 constituency of the Oshikoto Region focusing on theatre, drama, mascot, dance performance, audience interactions, dancing competition, quizzes and fish sales.

The NFCD was launched in Swakopmund in the Erongo Region some eight years ago and has since rolled out to seven regions such as Erongo, Omaheke, Otjozondjupa, Omusati, Oshana, Kavango West and Kunene.

To date, Siluka said, the initiative has raised over N.dollars 3.1 million that has been invested towards improving the quality of education of the host regions.

Initiated in 2012, the NFCD is about promoting fish consumption at the regional level and is been facilitated by the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT).

A fundraising gala dinner will be held on 27 September at Omuthiya in addition to the sport tournament and roadshows.
