One confirmed dead from N1

A person has been confirmed dead from N1 seasonal influenza in Windhoek.

Responding to questions on Wednesday, Health Ministry Executive Director Ben Nangombe said the man died from N1 seasonal influenza on Sunday at an unidentified health facility in Windhoek.

N1 is a seasonal influenza as classified by the WHO following the 2008/09 outbreak.

The Ministry has mobilized surveillance mechanisms and has been monitoring the situation since the first 7 cases were reported for more than three weeks ago, Nangombe added.

He said in winter time there is always an increased amount of flu cases and urged the public to seek medical treatment.

Antiviral treatment is available at public hospitals for laboratory confirmed cases and vaccination shots against flu are available at private pharmacies, he said.

Other prevention measures include practicing respiratory hygiene by covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing and washing the hands often with soap and water.
