Opuwo: Opuwo Mayor, Kasipo Kakondo and the council management expressed their gratitude on Monday for the significant contributions of outgoing Kunene Regional Police Commander, Commissioner James Nderura, towards upholding justice for the community. Nderura is set to retire from his position on 30 September as the highest law enforcement officer in the region after serving for 35 years, with 14 of those years as regional commander.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Kakondo, during the launch of Operation Katjavivi and Operation African Amnesty Month at the Opuwo Open Market centre on Monday, noted that the event also served as a tribute to an individual whose significant contributions to the Kunene region will be remembered. “Commissioner Nderura has shown exceptional leadership in this region. His guidance has been key in navigating complex challenges while protecting the welfare of our residents,” he said.

He further noted that Nderura has successfully led several important operations aimed at protecting the people of Kunene and Namibia as a whole, including natural resources, while showcasing the effectiveness of collective action in addressing urgent community issues through collaboration with stakeholders. Kakondo further stated that Operation Katjavivi, named after Nderura, will create a safe and secure environment that fosters community growth through collective efforts.

“This event is both a reflection of our safety initiatives and a celebration of committed leadership and community strength. Together we will advance the interest of Opuwo and the Kunene Region, ensuring safety and a prosperous future for generations to come,” concluded Kakondo. During the same event, Kunene Governor Vipuakuje Muharukua stated that Operation Katjavivi signifies a time for reflection, responsibility, and a renewed commitment to creating safer communities, enhancing justice, and promoting peace throughout Namibia.

“This operation is not only a call to action but a beacon of unity in tackling the pressing challenges that affect our people. It symbolises a collective will that together, we can secure a future of safety and dignity for all,” he said.
