Oshana wins Heroes Championships

OSHAKATI: Host Oshana Region was declared the overall winner of the 2014 Oshana Heroes Sports Club Regional Championships that took place at the Independence Stadium in Oshakati on Saturday.

The Oshana Heroes Sports Club Regional Championships is an annual athletics and basketball sporting event for people living with disabilities from different regions in Namibia.

It was introduced in 2003. The Omusati Region was the overall champion last year.

Sports officer in the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Toini Kasheeta told Nampa on the sidelines of the prize giving on Saturday Oshana dominated in most of the athletics field events.

“The Oshana Region also won the basketball competition by defeating the Khomas Region’s team, Wheel Ability A, by 23-7 goals in the final,” she said.

The Oshana team defeated the Ohangwena Region’s team 22-0 in the first basketball match and Wheel Ability B by 18-0 in the second match.

Leticia Ifikepunye from the Oshana Region and Ananias Shikongo from the Khomas Region were crowned the 2014 Oshana Heroes Sports Club Championships’ Best Female and Best Male Athletes, respectively.

Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshikoto, Erongo, Hardap, Karas, Kavango, Khomas, Zambezi and the host Oshana are the regions that participated in this year’s championships.
