The Under-20 football team of the Otjiwarongo Constituency on Sunday won the Otjozondjupa Region’s annual governor’s cup.

The Otjozondjupa Governor’s Annual Cup for 2022 was held on Saturday and Sunday at the Umulunga Sports Stadium in Grootfontein.

The football and netball teams from the seven constituencies of Okahandja, Omatako, Okakarara, Otjiwarongo, Otavi, Grootfontein and Tsumkwe participated in the tournament.

The Otjiwarongo and Okahandja constituency football teams played the finals, which was won by Otjiwarongo after defeating Okahandja 5-4 on penalties.

A senior official in the Otjozondjupa Governor’s Office, William Virore, on Monday told Nampa in an interview that the two teams drew 1-1, which resulted in them playing the penalties.

Virore stated that the Okahandja Under-19 netball team was also tough to beat throughout the games and consequently defeated the Omatako Constituency in the finals.

“We also selected 30 boys from this tournament, from whom we will select the best 22 football players who will represent the region at the Under-20 regional games,” said Virore.

He also explained that the same tournament saw 12 girls being selected to become the Under-19 regional netball team representatives.

The winning teams for both netball and football received floating trophies and medals.

The Okakarara Constituency football team was the defending champion this year, while the Grootfontein netball team also defended and lost the netball trophy at the tournament.
