Local authority councillors of the Otjiwarongo Municipality on Wednesday re-elected themselves back to their political positions in the municipality.

The seven local authority councillors on Wednesday held their internal annual election exercise at the Otjiwarongo Municipality Chambers, where they were sworn into their positions by Magistrate Karel Muyeghu.

Mayor Gottlieb Shivute was nominated by his fellow councillor, Godhardt Hoko and was seconded by Julienda Kampungu to retain his position of mayor.

In return, Shivute also nominated Kampungu to return to her position of deputy mayor, which was seconded by another councillor, Hilda Jesaja.

The politicians also re-elected Hoko back to his position of chairperson of the management committee of the municipality, together with Jesaja and Sebetius Guiteb.

Jesaja and Guiteb have been members of the management committee of the municipality.

They also confirmed councillor Ernst Muraranganda in his position as an additional council member of the management committee, while Gideon Iiyambo is an ordinary councillor.

Shivute, Kampungu, Hoko and Jesaja are all from the Swapo Party. Guiteb is a member of the Landless People’s Movement (LPM), while Muraranganda is from the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), and Iiyambo from the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC).

In his acceptance speech, Shivute promised to carry out the council mandate, saying so far there is a high influx of people to Otjiwarongo, which is exerting pressure on the council to render residential plots, clean drinking water, sewage systems, adequate streets and electricity connections.

The seven councillors are confirmed to serve the Otjiwarongo Municipality in these positions until 30 November 2023.
