Otjozondjupa government employees vote in favour of strike

Government employees in the Otjozondjupa Region voted in favour of a strike at their two-day voting exercise.

Returning officer for exercise, Job Nambili, on Friday night announced the election results at the verification centre in Otjiwarongo as follows:

Nambili said a total of 3 031 workers had cast their votes at the nine different polling stations in the region, of which 2 927 voted yes for the strike, while 67 no, and 37 ballot papers were spoiled.

The voting took place on Thursday and Friday countrywide on whether or not to take strike action after trade union representatives and government reached a deadlock on wage negotiations.

The workers are demanding a salary increase of nine per cent, transport allowance of 10 per cent and another nine per cent on housing benefits.
