Otjozondjupa Region will this year host the second edition of the National Youth Games

The Otjozondjupa Region will this year host the second edition of the National Youth Games, which were slated for the Erongo Region.

The Youth Games, which see Under-20 athletes from all 14 regions of Namibia competing in different sport codes, attracted over 1 800 athletes in its maiden edition in 2018.

In an interview with Nampa today, the Namibia Sport Commission’s Chief Administrator, Freddy Mwiya, said this year’s games are still on but will no longer be held in Swakopmund as previously planned.

“The launch for the games will be on 09 November 2020. The games will be held in the Otjozondjupa Region that is all I can share with you at the moment,” he said.

“Each region submitted a list of 92 people, including officials. That means each team will have 80 athletes and 12 officials, which means 1 288 people are expected to travel from the different regions for the games,” said Mwiya, adding that their goal as a commission is to close of the year with sporting activities after a long layoff due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The chief administrator stated that the Youth Games cannot be used by athletes as a qualifier for any major global competitions, but national selectors will use these games to identify talented athletes who can represent the country at Region Five Games that can then provide a chance for athletes to qualify for bigger competitions.
