Pensioner allegedly commits suicide at Swakopmund

A 77 year old pensioner reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a pistol on Thursday afternoon in Swakopmund.

A police report issued by Erongo Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu on Friday indicated that the deceased was discovered by his wife who left him at Retirement Village where they lived, when she went to town for shopping.

It is alleged that when she returned home, the house was locked from inside and when she finally managed to get the door open, that was when she discovered her husband in a pool of blood with a pistol in his right hand.

The deceased who has been identified as Manfred Mai is suspected to have shot himself once in the mouth.

No foul play has been suspected and no suicide note was left behind.

The body was taken to Walvis Bay Police Mortuary for post mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

In an unrelated matter, a one year-old toddler reportedly died at the hands of her step-father i the Usab residential area in Karibib.

The incident reportedly took place between 06h00 and 18h00on Thursday while the deceased's mother was at work.

It is not clear what exactly the suspect did to the toddler, however she was found with bruises all over her body.

The suspect, a 27 year old man was arrested and is expected to appear in the Karibib Magistrates Court on Monday.

Police investigations continue.
