Police officer arrested for alleged theft of rhino horn

A police officer attached to the Namibian Police Force’s Protected Resources Unit in the Otjozondjupa Region was on Tuesday arrested and charged with the theft of a rhino horn left in his care.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson in the region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha on Wednesday told Nampa six rhino horns were handed over to the 45-year-old police officer for safekeeping between 30 September 2022 and 03 October 2022.

“The sergeant allegedly only booked in five horns at the Otjiwarongo Police Station and the sixth one was missing,” she said.

The officer was approached for questioning and he did not provide satisfactory answers, Mbeha stated.

The missing horn weighs 12 kilogrammes and has an estimated value of N.dollars 96 000.

The suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday or Thursday.

Police investigations continue.
