President Hifikepunye is happy that the Green Scheme projects in the country working as expected

WINDHOEK: President Hifikepunye Pohamba is happy that the Green Scheme projects in the country are working as expected.

He said this during visits to the Divundu Rehabilitation Centre farm and Shadikongora Green Scheme project in Kavango East Region on Wednesday.

The Green Scheme irrigation project at Divundu was commissioned in 1996 by then president Sam Nujoma.

The farm currently produces maize and wheat as its primary production, but also has 2 085 guava trees, 107 small mango trees and 63 matured mango trees.

Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture Olivia Kaanandunge outlined the farming operations of the Divindu prison farm to Pohamba, saying it faces challenges such as a lack of irrigation system technicians to repair broken pivots, lack of a proper mechanical workshop, and insufficient silos for storing produce.

She also informed the president that the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services of the Ministry of Safety and Security is planning to establish a 700hectares crop farm at Karayi near Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West Region of which the feasibility study had been completed, but some members of the community are objecting to the development.
