A priest of the Roman Catholic Church who died in an accident outside Grootfontein last Tuesday, has been identified as Charles Chiseta Mikaya from Malawi.

Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha, on Monday said the deceased was identified over the weekend by relatives.

Mikaya, a priest in the Kavango East Region, died instantly after a pick-up vehicle he was operating allegedly overturned and caught fire on the B8 road.

“Mikaya was burnt beyond recognition, while a 42-year-old male passenger, a church deacon of the Roman Catholic Church who was travelling with him in the vehicle, survived the accident with serious injuries,” said Mbeha.

The injured passenger is a Zambian national, she said.

The accident occurred around 12h00 last Tuesday, approximately 30 kilometres east of Grootfontein.

Police investigations in the matter continue.
