Rape accused denied bail at Mariental

A 39-year-old man arrested for the alleged rape of a 21-year-old female in Ombili Informal Settlement in Mareintal on Saturday made his first appearance at the Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

Silas Pohamba Simon appeared before Magistrate ShaatunaKalla on a charge of rape and was denied bail on the grounds that he is a flight risk and has a similar case in which he interfered with witnesses. He was on bail for the first offence.

The case was postponed to 28 August for further police investigations and for him to apply for legal aid at the Directorate of Legal Aid in the Ministry of Justice.

It is alleged that Simon between 18h00 and 19h00 at or near NamPower station at Ombili, Mariental, grabbed, overpowered, and rape the victim while on she was on her way home.

He is detained at the Mariental Police holding cells.

In an unrelated incident three men aged 17, 25 and 32 arrested after they allegedly stole and slaughtered a goat valued at N.dollars 2 500 made their first appearance at the Mariental Magistrates Court on a charge of stock theft in front of Shaatuna.

The accused Willem Phillipus, Silvanus Donovan Kaffer and the 17-year-old minor were denied bail and matter postponed for legal aid application, three witness statements and further investigations.

It is alleged the three men on Friday at around 16h00 at Plot K-1 Hardap near Mariental stole the goat and slaughter it. Few meat pieces were recovered.

They matter was postponed to 03 August and the three are detained at the Mariental Police holding cells.
