Registration of candidates for Opuwo rural by-election commences

The registration and nomination of candidates for Opuwo rural constituency by-election slated for 09 March this year commenced here on Tuesday.

The commencement period for the nomination officially started on Tuesday will end of 29 January 2020.

The Electoral Commission of Namibia's (ECN) Opuwo Rural constituency supplementary registration supervisor and assistance regional coordinator, Mike Nganjone has confirmed to Nampa that the by-election nomination of candidates for Independent Candidate is due on 27 January while for political party candidates will run till 29 January 2020.

Nganjone said interested contestants should collect Nomination Form 21 from ECN offices and fill it in so they can qualify to partake as candidates.

Political party candidates Nomination Form should be accompanied by the party's certified ECN registration certificate and Independent candidates Nomination Forms should be submitted together with a list of 150 names of registered illegible voters who are from Opuwo rural constituency in order for their applications to be successful, He added.

Nganjone further said that the form for both independent candidates and party candidates should be accompanied with an of N. dollars 2 500 to be paid at the Ministry of Finance's Inland Revenue Offices or make arrangements with the magistrate at the Opuwo magistrate court as in the past since there is no Ministry of Finance office in Opuwo.

The portfolio of councillor became vacant after the resignation of former Opuwo Rural Councillor Kazeongere Tjeundo of the Popular Democratic Movement, in line with the Electoral Act 47 of 2014 and the constitution, which require political office bearers to resign if they want to be included on political party lists of candidates for the National Assembly.

Nganjone noted that 797 people registered for the by-election during the supplementary registration last year and they expect more than 7000 voters to cast their votes on 09 March 2020.
