Retired police officer dies in road accident

A retired Police officer Martin Kandembenge died in a road accident when the vehicle in which he travelled overturned in the Oshigambo area of the Oshikoto Region on Wednesday.

Confirming the incident to Nampa on Friday, Inspector Ellen Nehale of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Public Relations Unit in the region said Kandembenge, 60, was rushed to the Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital where he died upon arrival.

He was the owner of the vehicle, a white Toyota pick-up, allegedly driven by unlicensed driver. The 47-year-old driver, Nehale said, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Onandjokwe Hospital in a serious condition.

According to Nehale, the two were travelling from Oshigambo heading to Oshakati. While on the Oshigambo road at a curve, the driver lost control over the vehicle and overturned it, explained Nehale, adding that a culpable homicide case docket has been opened in connection with the incident.

The next of kin of the deceased have been informed.
