Phnom penh: The number of road fatalities in Cambodia declined to 694 people in the first half of 2025, a drop of 12 percent from 793 over the same period last year, said a National Road Safety Committee’s report on Thursday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, besides the death toll, road accidents injured 1,476 others during the January-June period this year, down 30 percent from 2,116 in the same period last year, the report said. The Southeast Asian country recorded 1,066 cases of road crashes during the above-mentioned period, also down 30.5 percent from 1,534 cases, it added.
Phan Rim, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, stated that road crashes kill about four people per day. “The major causes of road accidents included speeding, failing to adhere to traffic rules, not respecting the right of way, careless turning, reckless overtaking, driving under the influence of alcohol, and drowsy driving,” he told Xinhua.
Road accidents continue to be the leading cause of deaths and injuries in Cambodia, costing the country about 466 million U.S. dollars a year, according to a report jointly conducted by the United Nations Development Program in Cambodia and the National Road Safety Committee.
