Opuwo: The Roads Authority (RA) celebrated a significant milestone on Tuesday, awarding certificates to 278 youths who successfully completed their training in road construction in Opuwo.

According to Namibia Press Agency, this initiative forms part of the Roads Authority’s strategic vision, specifically regarding the ongoing phase one project of the Opuwo-Okangwati road. The training, completed last month at the Ministry of Health and Social Services center, was a collaborative effort between the RA, the Office of the Kunene Governor, and the contracting company, Pregon Consulting Engineers.

The Roads Authority served as the primary trainer, providing participants with practical, hands-on experience in road construction. During the awards ceremony, RA Chief Executive Officer Conrad Lutombi stated that the recipients were tested and participated in training to assess their understanding while gaining knowledge that would help them survive and contribute to the country’s economy.

Lutombi further noted that the Roads Authority has several projects underway in the region, including the upgrade of the Kamanjab-Khorixas road to bitumen level, in addition to the detailed design of the Opuwo-Sesfontein road, including the design of the Oute bridge. ‘We will see the construction of the bridge at the Oute River, which should be treated as an emergency. We want you to participate. This training you received will prepare you to engage in many other projects across the country,’ Lutombi remarked.

The training emphasised practical, hands-on experience in road construction, equipping participants with the technical skills needed to excel in the industry. Kunene Governor Vipuakuje Muharukua reminded the trainees to perform their duties with excellence if called upon for construction work, adding that his office would ensure that youths are recruited for road projects, but it is up to them to maintain their jobs.
