The Roads Authority (RA) on Tuesday announced the immediate closure of the Rosh Pinah-Aussenkehr road due to flooding from the Orange River.

The authority in a public notice on Tuesday stated that the DR212 section of the road has been flooded since Tuesday due to high inflows which have caused water levels to rise to more than six metres.

The increase of the water levels in the Orange River is attributed to the continued heavy rainfall in some parts of South Africa and Lesotho.

“In these circumstances the RA would like to kindly request the affected travellers to make use of the Keetmanshoop-Aus-Rosh Pinah road, as the DR212 portion is not safe for motorists,” said the notice.

The Rosh Pinah-Aussenkehr road will remain closed for public use until further notice.

The RA will also continue to monitor the situation on the Rosh Pinah-Oranjemund MR118 road, and should there be a need to close the road as well, the public will be notified.

It further requested the general public to do their part and report potholes and other damage on any of the tarred or gravel roads in the ||Kharas Region along the Orange River for safety reasons.
