Rundu contractor accused of building material theft appears in court

Marthinus du Toit, 36, arrested on Thursday in connection with the alleged theft of building materials belonging to his employer Helmsman Group, appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Du Toit appeared before magistrate Sonja Samupofu on charges of theft of building materials worth N.dollars 1.4 million from a construction site of a mall at Divundu in the Kavango East Region.

According to the charge sheet records seen by Nampa on Sunday, it is alleged that Du Toit committed the crime between February and March this year from the site where he worked as a contractor.

The items he allegedly stole include truckloads of cement valued at N.dollars 350 000, 10 loads of concrete stones worth N.dollars 233 450, 5 000 super bricks worth N.dollars 500 000, 130 steel mesh wire worth N.dollars 275 253 and 10 angle irons worth N.dollars 283 235.

Some of the items such as a load of sand were recovered at the Bagani Combined School as well as at the Andara Shopping Centre.

It is also alleged that Du Toit used earthmoving equipment from the construction site to construct a gravel road to Ndhovu lodge in the Mukwe Constituency.

The accused was granted bail of N.dollars 20 000 while his case was postponed to 07 October 2021.

He was represented by Bernard Tjatjara of Bernard Tjatjara and Co Incorporated Law Firm.
