Rundu man killed over cellphone

A 27-year-old man died on Friday in Rundu after he was shot on the right-back of his chest.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner BonifasiusKanyetu told Nampa on Sunday that the incident happened at Ndama location at around 19h50.

It is alleged that the suspect was shot in the back of his chest after trying to help a female colleague whose phone was snatched by a suspected thief, said Kanyetu.

He said one of the suspects allegedly grabbed a phone belonging to a female colleague of the deceased and fled with it which prompted the deceased to chase after the suspect and when he caught up with him, an accomplice of the suspect approached from behind to free his partner in crime, armed with a pistol and shot the deceased from behind before escaping with the phone.

The deceased later succumbed to his injuries at the Rundu state hospital

He was identified as Joseph Elago, 27-years-old, a worker at Mr. Price and his next of kin have been informed.

Kanyetu said that the suspects are still at large and investigations into the matter continue.
