The Inspector General of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol), Lieutenant General Sebastian Ndeitunda has ordered an investigation into the shooting of three inmates at the Rundu police station holding cells on Monday.

This was revealed by NamPol’s Head of Public Relations, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi on Tuesday, in response to the alleged shooting incident in which three trial awaiting prisoners were injured.

She said the behaviour of the suspect is uncalled for, which forced the Inspector General to immediately constitute an investigation.

Shikwambi said a case of attempted murder has been registered against the police officer.

The police spokesperson said the three inmates were allegedly shot after they aggressively approached an armed Warrant Officer when they refused to be taken back into the holding cells.

“During the process, the member discharged two rounds that ended up striking the inmates, causing serious injuries,” said Shikwambi.

She said one of the inmates fractured his left leg, while the second inmate also injured his left leg and the third sustained injuries to his abdomen and left leg. However, they are reported to be in a stable condition at the Rundu Intermediate Hospital.

Shikwambi further said the suspect has not yet been arrested, pending the investigation by the internal investigation unit at Rundu into the matter.
