Scholtz Appointed National Cricket Captain

Nicolaas Scholtz has been appointed as captain of the Namibian senior cricket team for the upcoming season.

Scholtz takes over from adel Burger who stepped down as captain due to work commitments, although he will still be available for the national side.

The 27-year-old Scholtz is an experienced cricketer and has represented Namibia in 149 first class and Level A matches as well as 37 T20 matches. He aanced through the Namibian youth system and captained Namibian U19 at the U19 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2006.

He made his first class debut against Uganda in 2004 and soon established himself in the senior side.

Scholtz is a dependable all-rounder, bowling leg-spin and batting in the middle order. He has career best bowling figures of five wickets for 13 runs which he took in a T20 match against Canada last year, and a top score of 150 not out in a first class match.

Scholtz’s first match in charge will be in the African Sixes tournament that takes place on 6 and 7 September at Centurion Park, Pretoria where Namibia will compete against South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Meanwhile, Cricket Namibia announced that a record number of teams have entered the domestic national cricket club leagues which will commence on 20 September. Clubs throughout Namibia will compete in the Premier, First and Second Leagues.

The competing clubs are Wanderers, CCD, United, WHS Old Boys Cricket Club, Namibia Defence Force, Otjiwarongo, Gobabis, Welwitschia and Zebra Cricket Club.

Namibia will also once again compete in the Cricket South Africa provincial series, which will include ten three-day matches, six 50-over matches and four T20 matches.

Namibia’s first match is against Western Province at the Wanderers field in Windhoek on 9-11 October 2014.
