Schools in Gobabis celebrate Readathon 2019

Schools in Gobabis celebrated the National Readathon week with reading and spelling activities here Friday.

Readathon is a week-long reading campaign which is run by the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (MoEAC).

The purpose of the Readathon week is to instill reading habits in children and nurture a culture of reading in Namibia.

Readathon 2019 was celebrated under the theme 'Read Namibia: combat drought to improve food security. The campaign ran from 23 -27 September.

A statement from the office of the Regional Governor, Festus Uitele read on his behalf by Omaheke schools senior librarian, Sibongakonke Dube said the theme has been specifically chosen as a means to address the current challenge of drought and water scarcity in the country.

Readathon is a strategy to enhance core skills of literacy and numeracy for effective implementation of the new reading period. The statement explained.

The statement further read, that Readathon is expected to reach every nook and cranny of the country as schools, community organisations, individuals, government institutions and civil society are all bound by a common goal to improve reading in the society.

The same statement was read at the different schools in the region.

Through MoEAC, The Republic of Namibia annually observes the last week of September a Readathon day of celebrating all reading activities that learners engage in throughout the year.

In his statement, Uitele further announced that in 2020 the Ministry of Education Arts and Culture will launch a nation-wide reading campaign under the theme 'One Book One Child' as a collaboration platform to network existing reading initiatives and to mobilise additional capacity to get the nation to read with more emphasis on early grades.

To celebrate the Readathon day, Gobabis primary school held spelling test competition in the lower primary learner while the Upper primary were challenged to a spelling Bee competition.

Speaking at the opening of Nossobville primary school Readathon day celebration, the school's principal Hein Husselmann urged learners to care for the environment saying unconcerned decisions towards the environment can have long lasting consequences. look after the earth and the earth will look after you Husselmann concluded.

Nossobville primary concluded their celebration with rain chants by the pre-primary learners as well as the laying down of coins from a fundraiser held by the school for the Regional library.

Learners of the Ben Van Der Walt primary school celebrated with a short ceremony where they held presentation on the impact and causes of drought and receded poems about drought.
