Second athletics GP a success

The President of Athletics Namibia Erwin Naimhwaka says the Namibia National Cross Country Grand Prix of the 2022 Season which took place at the National Youth Stadium in Sesfontein was a huge success.

Speaking to Nampa on Sunday, Naimhwaka said the competition had produced fireworks as most athletes showed some improvements from their previous outings.

“Based on yesterday’s showing, we are expecting an exciting event next weekend in Windhoek. Athletes can still register until Tuesday. I am hoping to see a few big names of Namibian track and field taking part in this event,” he said.

The Third Grand Prix Series of the season saw Tuuliki Angala from the Oshana region come first in the Senior Women’s (20-39 years old ) 10 kilometre (km) Run in a time of 37 minutes and 57.87 seconds (38:57.87), followed by Indileni Mweshamekange from the Khomas Region who came home in 38:57.96 with Victoria Kaliteka of Khomas third in 39:44.62.

In the men’s same event, Daniel Paulus of Khomas came first in a time of 28:23.48, followed by Simon Paulus (28:43.46) of Khomas while Jeremia Shaliaxwe was third with a time of 29:22.14.

In the Junior Women’s event, Wilka Nauyoma beat her compatriots from the Ohangwena region Helaria Nghidishange and Ndinelao Haimbala to second and third respectively.

In the men’s section, Jufanno Natroos of Karaswas the winner of the 6km event followed by Wilson Energy Amwaalanga and Veiko Velishavo, of Oshana and Oshikoto respectively.

There were also several developmental races that saw children as young as eight years old participating in the 2 000meter races.
