A 23-year-old male security guard succumbed to a gunshot wound he sustained in an alleged shooting incident which took place on Friday at the Cheetah Cement factory situated about six kilometres north of Otjiwarongo.

According to the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha on Saturday preliminary police investigations indicate that the deceased was reportedly knocking off at about 18h00 and shortly after he handed his shift over to his colleague, a gunshot sound was heard inside their duty room at the main gate of the cement factory.

He is yet to be identified.

“The deceased was shot once in the stomach and was taken to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital immediately, where he was transferred to Windhoek for further medical attention. He died in an ambulance while on the way to Windhoek,” said Mbeha.

Mbeha further told this agency that the incident which occurred at approximately 18h00 Friday evening, was only reported to the Otjiwarongo Police Station at about 20h50 the same Friday, therefore the police officers did not attend to the incident while it was still fresh with all its concrete facts and evidence.

The police then had no choice but to arrest the 31-year-old male colleague as the suspect in the matter, on a charge of murder.

He is expected to appear in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Police investigations continue.
