Senior citizens win big at Olufuka Festival

OUTAPI: The 12-day 2015 Olufuko Festival, which ended at Outapi in the Omusati Region on Friday, has crowned the Senior Citizen exhibition group as the overall champions of its commercial exhibition section.

One of the organizers of the festival, Nyeuvo Ekandjo confirmed this to Nampa shortly after the awards-giving ceremony held at the Olufuko Festival centre on Friday evening.

The Senior Citizen Group, which consists mostly elderly women from Omusati Region, was also the winner in the kapana category.

The group last year was crowned the best overall winner in the small and medium enterprises (SME) category of the festival.

The group showcased trees planting services and traded in traditional food and drinks, which has attracted a number of viewers throughout the festival period.

Senior Citizen was awarded overall best winner certificate. Other exhibitors that received winning certificates were Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) Oshiwambo Radio (media), Aina Mashuna (agriculture: seeds produce), Hilia Hangula (Agricultural produce and services), Electoral Commission of Namibia (corporate and government institutions).

Kwafela Trading Enterprises is the best exhibitor in the SME category and Paavo’s Products is the winner in the Arts and Crafts category.

Olufuko Festival reached its 4th edition this year, and has attracted 295 exhibitors compared to 278 exhibitors of last year.

The main focus of the festival is female initiation, under which girls between the age of 15 and 20 have to go through in order to be prepared from childhood into adult womanhood since the festival’s inception in 2012.

Some 104 girls of the said age participated in the female initiation of this year, compared to 97 initiation girls of last year.

Founding President Dr Sam Nujoma is the patron of the Olufuko Festival.
