Shack fires claim two lives at Otjiwarongo

A one-year-old baby boy is amongst the two deceased people that burned to death while asleep at Otjiwarongo on Friday night.

Acting Namibian Police Force (NamPol)'s Otjozondjupa Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner Moses Khairabeb in an interview with Nampa on Saturday said the baby has been identified as Festus Paulus.

The incident allegedly occurred at a time when his parents had gone to a drinking spot where traditionally brewed beer is made in the New Ombili informal settlement, said Khairabeb.

The baby was alone inside the shack house at the time when the fire broke out, he added.

The police officer said a 42-year-old Hosea Hoaeb also burned beyond recognition after a shack he was sleeping in caught fire and burned completely on Friday night in the Tsaraxa-Aibes informal settlement at Otjiwarongo.

The cause of fire in both incidents is still unknown to us, Khairabeb said adding that the deceased people's next of kin have been informed.

Police investigations continue.
