SKW and KNVC win volleyball champs

WINDHOEK: Sports Klub Windhoek (SKW) female volleyball team and Khomas NamPol Volleyball Club (KNVC) male team on Saturday here won the Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) Cup.

The games were played at the University of Namibia’s (UNAM) main campus in Windhoek.

The NVF Cup is an annual tournament that in the past was played by the best team in Windhoek and Swakopmund. With the formation of five regional leagues across the country, the regional league winners plus their runner-ups contest for the tournament.

In this year’s tournament the preliminary round started in Rundu, with 20 teams participated in the tournament, which consisted of 10 female and 10 male teams. The winners in Rundu travelled to Swakopmund for the quarter and semifinals.

Teams that reached the finals were Defence Force (NDF) female team that has won the tournament five times in a row and Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW). While in the men’s final Namibia Defence Force (NDF) who have won the cup four times since 2010 reached the final were they meet Khomas NamPol Volleyball Club.

In the first final on Saturday in the female categories SKW ended NDF’s dominance of five years in a row when they defeated them 3-2 after five sets of volleyball. While in the men’s category a very dominant Khomas Nampol Volley Club over power NDF who were a no match for them with a win of 3-1 after four sets of volleyball.

The two winners walked away with a trophy, gold medals and N.dollars 8,000 cheque. They will also represent Namibia at the 2015 Zone Six Club Championships in Swaziland.

Addressing the player after the tournament NVF President Joel Matheus said this year’s tournament marked the beginning of a great future for Namibian volleyball and he was happy that all the teams gave it their all from the beginning to the end.

“This was the first time that we organized the NVF Cup with team from the five regional leagues and I am happy that we learned a lot throughout this process and we are hoping that next year we will have even a much better tournament then we did this year, that is with your support as players.

“Todays tournament showed that the team have prepared well and with SKW and Khomas Nampol winning the tournament after NDF’s dominance for a long time, we have learned the game has improved and we expect to see much more come next season,” said Matheus.
