Soldier arrested for negligence of firearm at Rundu

A member of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) was arrested on Friday in Rundu for allegedly failing to safeguard his firearm after his AK-47 rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition was stolen at a local restaurant.

According to a weekend crime report availed to the media, the soldier whose age is unknown was arrested for allegedly failing to safeguard a firearm and negligent loss of a firearm.

The report says the soldier was arrested after his Ak-47 Automatic rifle, which belongs to the NDF, was stolen from a vehicle by an unknown suspect who broke into the vehicle where the rifle was at around 20h30 and fled the scene.

So far, a case of theft from a motor vehicle was also registered. However, no arrest nor a recovery has been made yet and police investigations into the matter continue.

In another separate incident, a 43-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by his brother with a broomstick at Mafugu village in the Kavango West region on Sunday.

The report says the woman sustained serious injuries in the process. However, the suspect has not yet been arrested while investigations into the matter continue.
