SPPM to enhance culture of democracy in the country, President says

ONANDJABA: The reactivation of the Swapo-Party Pioneers’ Movement (SPPM) is about enhancing a culture of democracy in the country, President Hifikepunye Pohamba said yesterday.

He said this in a statement read on his behalf by Swapo deputy Secretary-General Laura McLeod-Katjirua during the official opening of a three-day elective SPPM congress at the Onandjaba settlement of the Okalongo Constituency in Omusati Region.

New members of the SPPM central committee will be elected today.

Pohamba suggested that the SPPM be a channel through which the pioneers learn the policies, ideology and programmes of Swapo.

The SPPM has been active since Namibia gained independence in 1990, but the movement’s formal structure have not been established at national level.

The congress was the first to be held in an independent Namibia, following the last one held at Kwanza-Zulu, Angola during the country’s liberation struggle in 1983.

The president referred to the SPPM as a component of the Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL), and commended the secretary of the SPYL, Elijah Ngurare and his leadership for deciding to initiate the SPPM congress in an independent Namibia.

Pohamba, who is also the president of the ruling Swapo-Party, commended parents for providing guidance and support to their children to participate in the SPPM regional conferences.
