The Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to a 26-year-old man accused of murdering his girlfriend on Saturday.

Allen Fredricks made his first appearance before Magistrate Conchita Olivier on Monday on a charge of murder read with the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act.

It is alleged that Fredricks and the 38-year-old Chreselda Smith had an argument prior to the incident, during which Smith chased him out of their rented residence in Mondesa.

The accused then reportedly left the house to go and went to buy cigarettes and while on his way back, met his girlfriend walking home with two of her friends.

He approached them and Smith allegedly drew a kitchen knife and attacked him, but was overpowered by Fredricks who then grabbed the knife and allegedly used it to stab her with it. She was declared dead on the spot.

State Prosecutor Beata Mwahi opposed the granting of bail due to the serious nature of the charges against the accused, adding that it would also not be in the interest of the public if he were to be released.

He has however been advised to formally apply for bail.

Fredricks has opted to apply for legal aid.

The case has been postponed to 23 August 2021 for further investigation.
