The trial of rape accused Glenn Clifford Leister (27) is set to commence in the Swakopmund Regional court on 29 October 2021, following a decision by the Prosecutor General.

The decision was delivered to the accused when he appeared before Magistrate Nelao Brown in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Leister, who is a driver of the Swakopmund State Hospital Ambulance, stands accused of raping a 15-year-old girl, who was a Coronavirus (COVID-19) patient at the Swakopmund Municipal Bungalows, which were being used as an isolation facility in September 2020.

According to the State, represented by Johannes Shangadi, Leister will be prosecuted under the Combating of Rape Act 8 of 2000, which is a progressive law on rape.

Leister, who denied all charges, said he would be proceeding with his private lawyer, Jan Wessels, during the trial.

According to the State, the 15-year-old complainant reportedly told a social worker that Leister had grabbed her by the arm and raped her in the bungalow she was placed.

She allegedly pleaded with Leister to stop as he was hurting her, but he refused.

Leister is remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
