The Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to a Swakopmund Municipality traffic officer who appeared on Thursday for soliciting bribes from a taxi driver.

A press statement issued by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday stated that the 40-year-old Simon Namiseb allegedly solicited a bribe of an amount of N.dollars 2 000 in exchange for handing over a vehicle that he had confiscated from a taxi driver at the town.

It is alleged that the officer impounded the vehicle and parked it at Mondesa Police Station.

He however failed to issue a ticket to the taxi driver whose vehicle had no licence disc and could also not provide his driving licence and a transport permit and instead demanded payment from the driver.

“Namiseb was arrested on 02 July 2021 during a sting operation following a report to the ACC. His first appearance was on 05 July and then again on 15 July, where he was granted bail of N.dollars 5 000,” the statement noted.

The case has been postponed to 06 September 2021 for further investigation.

The ACC has arrested three law enforcement officers between January 2020 and July 2021 over alleged corruption in the Erongo Region.

The three include Detective Warrant Officer Jafet Simon whose next court appearance will be 20 July for Prosecutor-General’s decision, as well as Sergeant Moses |Naseb whose next court appearance will be on 27 September 2021 for plea and trial.
