Swapo’s gender parity without structural transformation rings hollow

The amendment of the Swapo Party constitution to bring about 50/50 representation of men and women in all party organs and structures was arguably one of the most salient features of the extra-ordinary congress on June 24, 2013. Gender advocates and feminists alike saw a cause célèbre in what was hailed in some quarters as a progressive and visionary approach to normalising gender relations in our country in line with both the SADC and AU protocols.
