Teachers Gear Up for Nantu Congress

THE Namibia National Teachers Union (Nantu) will hold its congress at Ongwediva this weekend, the union’s general secretary Basilius Haingura said on Sunday.

The union’s national congress is the highest decision-making forum for the union and it is held every five years.

Haingura, who has served three five-year terms as GS, says he will stand again should the people elect him in his position.

Sources claim that the congress has been pre-determined and that some regional chairpersons, who have already served more than three terms, have already been elected into their positions.

Haingura, however, denied that the congress has been pre-determined.

“We are elected, we do not choose by ourselves, the people whom we serve decide and vote for us and therefore one cannot say that we impose ourselves onto members,” said Haingura.

He added that it would be unfair to those who are working hard to be limited to serve for only a few years.

“You cannot give a fixed number of years for a person who is performing and not re-elect them because their term is over. Is that justice?,” he asked.
