Team Namibia ready for African Games

Namibia will send 81 athletes to the 12th edition of the African Games (AG) set for Rabat, Morocco from 19 to 31 August 2019.

The 2019 African Games marks the 54th anniversary of the games, and will see 17 sport codes using the games as qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo, Olympic Games.

About 29 sports codes have been announced for this year's games. Athletes with disabilities will this year not form part of the competition as their own African Games will be held in January 2020 for the first time.

Namibia will participate in 12 sport codes which are; athletics, archery, boxing, chess, cycling (road and mountain bike), fencing, karate, shooting, swimming, tennis, beach volleyball, and wrestling.

Apart from the 81 athletes team Namibia will be accompanied by 20 officials who are team medics, a doctor and members of the organising committee.

The will also be three journalists accompanying the team.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony on Monday, Namibia Sport Commission (NSC), Chief Administrator Freddy Mwiya said the teams are currently busy with their paces ahead of the games.

At many times we have a budget but the money is not released on time to us by treasury for teams to prepare but that will not stop us from telling the teams to use their own funds to prepare for the games, he said.

The chief administrator added that sport codes like boxing are well prepared because they hosted their national championships in KatimaMulilo and a week ago they had a competition with Angolan boxers which is helping them in their preparation for the African Games.

TjeripoMusutua a member of the local organising committee told the media in attendance during the team announcement that the AG are serving as a qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo, Olympic Games and as a country they want to have good qualifying times from athletes while in Morocco that's why they have selected only the best athletes to represent the country.
