Three people are missing after the car they were travelling in was washed away while attempting to cross the river at Otjivize between Opuwo and Okangwati in the Kunene region on Thursday.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Kunene Regional commander James Nderura has confirmed to Nampa, that 11 people whom he believed were harvesting Mopane worms were in the pick-up vehicle at the time of the incident.

He said eight passengers including the driver survived the incident and were taken to the Opuwo State Hospital while the remaining three are still missing.

‘According to the information that I have received, only three people are missing and I can’t confirm their gender ‘ he said.

He cautioned that people must avoid travelling at night as well as crossing the river at points they are not familiar with, noting that this is the second time a passenger car is washed away in the same area, during the rainy season.

Nine people died at the same spot two years ago when their vehicle was trying to cross the same river.
