Tjombe laid to rest

OKAHANDJA: The acting Paramount Chief of the OvaHerero people, Tumbee Tjombe was laid to rest at the heroes’ and heroines’ cemetery here on Sunday.

Tjombe, who also served as the acting Chief of the OvaHerero Traditional Authority (OTA), was buried next to OvaHerero chiefs Hosea Kutako, Clemence Kapuuo, Katjinda Tjiho and David Kakujorua Ndisiro.

The burial coincided with the tombstone unveiling of the Late Paramount Chief of the OvaHerero community, Kuaima Riruako who passed away in June this year.

Tjombe has been credited, among others, for masterminding closer cooperation between the OvaHerero and OvamBanderu communities, as well at the Nama people under the Nama Traditional Authority led by Chief Dawid Fredericks, especially on the issue of genocide and reparation.

This co-operation has been based on the historic Mariental Agreement signed between the two groups in 2007.

A eulogy delivered during the burial said Tjombe’s stand on the issue of genocide and reparation has been unequivocal, and this included his view that German-Namibians cannot continue to watch the demand of the affected Namibian communities on the sidelines.

In his reparation quest, he led many OvaHerero and OvamBanderu delegations in meetings, including the one with the former Director-General for African Affairs in the German Foreign Office, Walter Lindner in Windhoek in 2011 and then in 2012.

He also led a delegation which met German Member of Parliament and former Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul in Windhoek last year. Tjombe was born in Gobabis on 29 April 1947.

He leaves behind 13 children, and his wife Kaepere Tjombe, whom he had been married to for about 30 years.

Among the prominent people who attended the burial was the chairperson of the OvaHerero Development Foundation, Advocate Vekuii Rukoro; Okahandja Mayor Valerie Aaron; Spokesperson of the late Riruako, Hoze Riruako; and Councillor of the Windhoek North Constituency Ambrosius Kandjii.
