Traffic officer who died in motorbike accident identified

The identification of the senior traffic officer of Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region who died on Monday afternoon after the official police motorbike he was operating and overturned several times on the B1 road outside Otjiwarongo has taken place.

NamPol's Otjozondjupa Regional Commander, Commissioner Heinrich Tjiveze on Tuesday said the deceased has been identified by his close relatives as the 54-year-old Joseph Phillip Severus.

Severus was the traffic's NamPol sub-divisional head in the Otjozondjupa Region based at Otjiwarongo where he served as a chief inspector, said Tjiveze.

The police commander in an interview with Nampa at the accident scene on Monday said the late Severus died on official duty as he was returning from attending a meeting in line with his work at a farm situated between Otjiwarongo and Otavi.

It is alleged the traffic officer lost control over his police motorbike, which caused it to roll several times while he held onto it, some 35 kilometres north of Otjiwarongo at about 155 on Monday, Tjiveze said.

Police investigations in the matter continue.
