Swakopmund magistrate Conchita Olivier has denied bail to two accused, both employed as security guards at G4S, who appeared in the court on Monday on charges of theft.

The accused, 34-year-old Ricardo Ochurub and 30-year-old Wayne Khrone, are each facing a count of theft and have been charged under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, after they reportedly stole N.dollars 300 000 meant for an Automatic Teller Machine.

According to prosecutor Beata Mwahi, the State objected to the granting of bail for the two due to the seriousness of the case, as well as a fear that the accused would interfere with the case since there are still more arrests to be made.

“There is also still a large amount of money missing as only N.dollars 12 800 has been recovered so far. The investigations are also still at their early stages,” Mwahi noted.

Ochurub allegedly took off with a box of cash while his colleagues, who left him in a cash-in-transit vehicle, were loading money in another ATM at Swakopmund’s Spar Ocean View on 17 September.

According to the police, when the security guards returned to the car in order to proceed to Arandis, they did not find the suspect.

He was arrested on Thursday at the DRC informal settlement where he was found in the company of friends; two female and two male persons at a residence of his friend, where they are believed to have spent the night.

The amount of N.dollars 12 800 was found in a plastic bag on his body. The arrest was as a result of a tipoff by members of the community.

The second suspect, who is also an employee of G4S was arrested over the weekend, after evidence has linked him to the case.

The case was postponed to 15 November to allow for further investigations and to allow the accused, who have both opted to find private lawyers, to do so.
