Two men die in accident outside Otavi

OTAVI: Two men aged 24, and 21 years died instantly after a Citi Golf they were travelling in collided with an Iveco on the Otavi-Otjiwarongo road in the Otjozondjupa Region on Tuesday morning.

The spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha told Nampa in an interview that the accident occurred some 35 kilometers south of Otavi at approximately 06h20 on Tuesday morning.

Mbeha said the Citi Golf with a Grootfontein registration number was coming from the direction of Otavi to Otjiwarongo with three occupants, while the Iveco was coming from the opposite direction.

She said the two passengers in the Citi Golf died on the spot due to the severe impact of the collision.

“The names of the deceased persons’ are known to us, and will be released once their close relatives are formally informed,” said Mbeha.

She said that a 29-year-old driver of the Golf sustained serious injuries, and was admitted to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital in a critical condition.

The police officer explained that there were 28 occupants in the Iveco, including the driver.

She said the Iveco was transporting learners of the Maria Mwengere Senior Secondary School (SSS) who are on a holiday school tour from Windhoek to Rundu in the Kavango East Region.

Maria Mwengere SSS is one of the high schools in the Kavango East Region.

It is alleged that the Iveco driver was overtaking a truck on a blind spot, where two solid road marking lines are clearly visible, Mbeha said, adding that in the process of overtaking, the Iveco collided head-on with the oncoming Citi Golf.

Six learners sustained slight to serious injuries, and were taken to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital that same Tuesday morning.

Mbeha said a case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Otavi police station against the 28-year-old Iveco driver.

Police investigations in the matter continue.
