Unlicensed driver at Rundu denied bail

A 20-year-old unlicensed driver, who allegedly drove over and killed a 92-year-old woman last week while she was trying to cross the Trans-Caprivi Highway at Rundu, was denied bail on Tuesday.

He appeared before acting magistrate, Rufinus Hikerua, while public prosecutor Variety Matamata represented the State.

According to the charge sheet, Russu Victor appeared on charges of culpable homicide for the sudden death of Kalive Leya, a resident of Rundu’s Ndama location.

The accused was allegedly driving a Nissan Note with registration N10219RU and was travelling from east to the western direction of the highway, when he bumped the pensioner who was crossing the road, resulting in her dying on the spot.

The motorist was reportedly not in possession of a valid driver’s licence.

The case was postponed to 17 February 2021 for further police investigations.
