Upsets At Junior Tennis Tournament

CODIE van Schalkwyk and Jessica Riedel won the U16 boys and girls singles titles at the third annual NTA junior tennis tournament which took place in Windhoek on Saturday.

In the Boys U16 category, FNB development player Ronaldo Uirab caused an upset by beating Clemence Roeber who is currently ranked fourth in the country. However, Van Schalkwyk turned out to be too strong for him in the next round and went on to beat Paul Swieger in the final.

In the Girls U16 category, Jessica Riedel and Sylvia Schulz progressed to the final and this time Riedel won the match in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

Gina Moolman, the younger sister of Namibian national tennis players Carita and Lieze Moolman produced some excellent performances to win the bronze medal in the U16 category.

Although Gina is still only 11 years old she beat several older girls and proved that she is one to watch for the future.

The tournament, which was organised by Kallie Heese of the Central Tennis Club Tennis Academy, saw boys and girls from U10 to U16 age groups competing for NTA ranking points.

Due to heavy rain, no matches could took place on Friday and the doubles competition had to be cancelled, while Heese had to rearrange the singles matches of the different age groups at courts located in Academia, the Police tennis club and CTC.

Codie’s younger brother, Connor van Schalkwyk won the Boys U14 age group after beating Tevin Tait 6-3, 6-4 in the final, while Carien van Rooyen won the Girls U14 category, followed by Kiana Cormack and Steffi Schultz.

In another Boys U14 match, Risto Shikongo of the FNB Junior Tennis Development Programme shocked the much higher seeded Oliver Diggle beating him 8-7 in a Pro Set, after winning the tie-break 7-0.

The U12 boys’ competition played at the Academia sport field was decided on a round robin format and produced a lot of exciting games. In a tight match deciding the outcome of the group, the top-ranked Konrad Theron prevailed over Oliver Riethmueller 3-6; 6-4 and 7-1 in the deciding tie-breaker.

Theron won the group on aggregate points, finishing ahead of Deacon Dejon and Oliver Riethmueller in second and third places respectively.

The U12 girls’ competition was won by Taimi Nashiku, with Yone Minders coming second and Marze Marais third.

Melusi Khupe was crowned champion in the U10 boys’ division. Khupe, who won all his matches, showed great determination and a fighting spirit to beat Jaco Bekker who is currently ranked second in Namibia.

The U10 girls’ section was won by Caitlin Gilles who beat her sister Jaime Gillies in the final.

No matches were played in the U18 age group.

NTA junior president Clive Gawanab, who conducted the prize giving ceremony, thanked the TTA tennis school for the good organization, but he also reprimanded players and parents who withdrew or did not show up for the tournament.
