Kamanjab: Voting in the Kamanjab and Sesfontein constituencies began smoothly on Tuesday, with all 44 polling stations operating effectively. The by-elections started at 07h00 and are set to conclude at 21h00, followed by the counting of votes.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Mike Nganjone, the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) election officer for the Kunene Region, confirmed on Tuesday that all polling stations opened on time and that the queues are growing as the day progresses. By midday, no incidents had been reported, indicating a peaceful voting process.
At the Elias Amxab Secondary School polling station in Sesfontein, ECN Commissioner Pius Iikwambi urged voters to come out in large numbers to cast their votes for their chosen candidates. ‘We urge the community members to turn up in large numbers to exercise their democratic right to vote,’ he stated. Iikwambi also mentioned that the commission has made the necessary arrangements with private property owners to allow polling officials access to their properties for the voting process.
Iikwambi further indicated that all systems are functioning smoothly. He mentioned that the civic education programme has been running alongside voter registration and the voting process, ensuring that voters are informed and prepared to cast their votes.
Rinondjamo Tjomazeva, the presiding officer at the Omarumba polling station, also spoke to Namibia Press Agency, expressing expectations for increased voter turnout. The by-elections were necessitated by the appointment of Kamanjab councillors Nico Somaeb and Hedrick Somaeb of Sesfontein to the National Assembly in March.
