The Governor of the Kavango East Region, Bonny Wakudumo, said he refuses to believe that the region is one of the poorest in the country.

Wakudumo made the statement during the official inauguration of the Rundu Vocational Training Centre’s agriculture campus here on Tuesday.

Wakudumo rejected the notion saying the region cannot be regarded as the poorest amidst its water abundance and fertile soil.

“The climate conditions in this region are favourable for agriculture,” he said.

He said by importing food from South Africa the country helps it to create employment for its people and industries instead of developing and building the two Kavango regions in terms of agriculture.

The governor said Namibians are keen on inaugurating good infrastructure before stating that the end results are not satisfactory.

He called on a faculty of agriculture to be introduced in order to capacitate agriculture in the region.

The recently released multidimensional poverty index report conducted by the Namibia Statistics Agency found Kavango West Region to be the poorest region in the country followed by the Kavango East Region.

The two regions have generally been reported as among the poorest in the country over the years.

The report further states that the multidimensional poverty index had the advantage of being fully decomposable from a variety of demographic and social variables that keep people trapped in poverty such as availability of safe drinking water, education, access to health and nutrition as well as social protection.
