A man who escaped from the Windhoek Correctional Facility in May this year, appeared in court on a charge of housebreaking on Monday after he was rearrested while allegedly breaking into a bar in Otjiwarongo.

The 37-year-old Simon Nopi Kambindu was serving a sentence of 51 years when he escaped from the Windhoek Correctional Facility in May this year.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha, told Nampa that Kambindu was allegedly caught while busy breaking into a bar at Otjiwarongo’s Orwetoveni residential area around midnight last Thursday.

He appeared in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court on a housebreaking charge Monday and was denied bail.

“During his arrest last Thursday, a zinc cutting tool and a bolt cutter were found in his possession, which prompted us to investigate him further,” said Mbeha.

NamPol then established that Kambindu was sentenced by a court in Windhoek to an effective 51 years and nine months and had escaped from the Windhoek Correctional Facility.

Mbeha said the police also discovered that Kambindu has various cases of theft of motor vehicles, theft out of motor vehicles, several house breakings and possession of drugs, amongst others, against him.

“Officials of the Windhoek Correctional Facility took him from us Monday afternoon so they can keep him there where he belongs,” she said.

Mbeha urged residents of Otjiwarongo to continue working with the police in order to arrest the perpetrators who are involved in all criminal activities at the town.
