Winter Schools Look At Potential of South

The traditional winter schools which were hosted this year by the Karasberge FA and Keinab FA in the South again were successful with speakers of high quality. In all cases the winter schools primarily focused on the potential of the South for the different economic branches which include cattle farming, SWAKARA and small stock farming as well as agri-tourism. Women’s programmes were also offered with inter alia Susan Coetzer who entertained the women at the Karasberge FA.

On both winter schools Gerrit van Zyl, a well-known farmer and Bonsmara breeder of the Free State who has won various prices and awards, gave an overview of effective cattle farming. The core of his message was that cattle farming in the South should most probably not be seen as the main source of income but rather supplementing the existing farming activities. Furthermore he emphasized productive animals and the keeping of records to determine which animals should stay in the herd.

Pieter Hugo discussed SWAKARA as an alternative to the current small stock industry at the Karasberge FA and at the Keinab FA the aantages and disaantages of small stock farming in the South.
