Nedbank Managing Director Martha Murorua has emphasised the importance of corporates familiarising themselves with the government’s financial priorities so they can understand what roles to play in ensuring that all Namibians prosper.

Murorua during Nedbank’s economic presentation and panel discussion at Swakopmund on Wednesday said the recently tabled National Budget was befittingly themed ‘Economic revival and caring for the poor’, in line with President Hage Geingob’s theme for 2023 as the Year of Revival.

She noted that it is an ambitious plan to create much-needed jobs, invest in infrastructure and promote economic growth.

“Nedbank Namibia’s purpose of being money experts who do good correlates well with the theme of the National Budget and we fully support the government’s commitment to reducing poverty and inequality,” she said.

Murorua added that Namibia is well positioned to capitalise on the opportunities presented on the global energy economic landscape and play a leading and meaningful role in developing green hydrogen.

At the same event, Murorua announced Nedbank Namibia’s contribution towards the Rössing Foundation’s mobile laboratory for science and mathematics initiative, which aims to reach 8 000 learners and 300 teachers in rural schools across the country.

This commitment will enable the initiative to reach more rural schools, which experience challenges such as limited access to educational facilities, particularly laboratories for science-based experiments.

“Like so many corporates in our country, we hold support for education on a national scale quite close to our hearts. There is a reason why quality education is ranked as critically important in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals under SDG 4,” she said.

The ‘Nedbank for Good’ golf series in Swakopmund, Henties Bay and Walvis Bay in August and September this year will also enable the reopening and operation of the mobile laboratory in the Erongo Region.
