COVID-19: Namibia records 109 new cases and six deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, has announced that Namibia on Sunday recorded 109 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 3 920.

In the daily update issued on Monday, Shangula said the new cases formed part of 1 814 results and represented a 6.0 per cent positivity ratio, with a sex distribution of 56 females and 53 males aged between seven months and 93 years.

The Khomas Region recorded the highest number of cases at 28, followed by Erongo Region with 17 cases, Omusati 14, Otjozondjupa 10, ||Kharas nine, and Oshikoto and Omaheke with seven cases each. The Kunene Region recorded five cases, Oshana four and Zambezi, one case.

Among the confirmed cases are 16 learners, five students and two healthcare workers.

Twelve cases are fully vaccinated, while 93 cases (85.5 per cent of the new cases) are not vaccinated.

Shangula further reported that 163 new recoveries were recorded, bringing total recoveries in the country to 144 903.

The number of active cases on Sunday stood at 8 506, of which 225 were hospitalised and 28 admitted to intensive care units (ICU). Two of the hospitalised cases received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 18 are fully vaccinated. Out of 28 cases in ICU, only two are fully vaccinated.

The minister also reported that by 22 January 2022, of 414 406 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 111 383 had received the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, including 3 215 are children aged 12 to 17 years. A total of 243 243 people had received two doses and 354 626 people had completed their vaccination, which translates to 24.1 per cent of the target population. Meanwhile, 13 464 people had received booster doses.
