COVID-19: Namibia records 116 cases, five deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula announced that Namibia on Saturday recorded 116 new COVID-19 cases and five deaths.

Updating on Sunday, Shangula said amongst the deaths recorded, two each were recorded at Onandjokwe and Okahao, while one was recorded in Windhoek district, adding that none of those who died were vaccinated.

The new COVID-19 positive cases were identified from 1 131 results received by laboratories in the preceding 24 hours and represent a 10.3 per cent positivity ratio. The cases have a gender distribution of 75 female and 41 male patients, with the youngest being two months old and the oldest, 87 years.

Shangula said the cases were reported from 13 regions; Omusati recorded the highest at 27, followed by Ohangwena with 20, Khomas at 16, Kunene 12, Otjozondjupa 10, Oshikoto 10, ||Kharas seven, Oshana five, Hardap four, Erongo three, while Kavango East and the Zambezi Region recorded one case each.

Shangula noted that of these cases, five received two doses of the vaccine, while four received one dose. He added that 45 of the confirmed cases are learners, eight are teachers, three healthcare workers and one a student.

The country, Shangula said, also recorded 74 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 119 870.

Namibia currently has 2 317 active cases, 166 of whom are hospitalised, of which 22 are in intensive care units.

As of Friday, a cumulative number of 220 395 people had received their first vaccine dose and 126 306 had received their second doses.
